Trial counsel register
The Board on Trial Counsel maintains a public licensed trial counsel register. Anyone can verify the validity of a trial counsel licence from this public register. The register has a search functionality with which you can search for licensed trial counsel by name, locality and date of granting the licence. Licensed trial counsel can choose the locality registered for them, such as their municipality of residence or the location of their office.
The public register does not provide an open listing of all licensed trial counsel.
Trial counsel licences are always valid until further notice. When a licence is granted, it is immediately registered in the public register. If the licence is cancelled or it expires, the individual’s details are removed from the public register. In other words, only the details of individuals who have a valid licence to serve as trial counsel can be found in the public register at any given time.
The contact information of licensed trial counsel may only be disclosed to the courts and other authorities if the person in question has given their consent for it. Lists of licensed trial counsel by the judicial districts of district courts and courts of appeal are available from the Board on Trial Counsel’s case management system (not from the public register). District courts and courts of appeal can use these lists and the contact details of counsel for purposes such as organising training in their judicial districts. The lists are available upon request.
